Habitat for Humanity Peterborough REALTOR® Build Days
August 2006

Members of the Peterborough and the Kawarthas Association of REALTORS® Inc. donned construction helmets and picked up tools to help build the Habitat for Humanity house on Clonsilla Avenue in mid-August. Members also staffed a charity barbecue in front of the site with all proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity.

Peter Robinson, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Peterborough and District, was pleased with the REALTOR® turnout. "This is an excellent example of community partnerships at work," Robinson said. "We get a lot of help from REALTORS® in sourcing land involved with builds."

REALTORS® were kept busy preparing the inside for insulation, setting up additional framing and parging the outside walls.

Robinson estimated the current Habitat house should be finished by mid-September. The house will be a 1,000 sq. ft. single-family home with four bedrooms. A family has already been selected to move into the house once it is finished and they have fulfilled their 500 hours of volunteer labor with the organization.

"The family is still volunteering beyond those 500 hours because they believe in the cause," Robinson said. Habitat for Humanity homes are owned by the families selected to live in them and they are provided with an interest-free mortgage. Homeowners are responsible for paying the mortgage, property taxes and insurance.
